Périgord is world-famous for its exceptional underground heritage. Ornate caves, spectacular chasms, underground rivers: the subsoil of the Dordogne conceals geological and prehistoric treasures that have fascinated visitors for millennia. From Domaine de Pouzelande, in the Périgord Blanc, the most beautiful sites are accessible within 35 to 55 minutes.
The Proumeyssac Chasm, "Crystal Cathedral"
35 minutes from the estate, the Proumeyssac Chasm is the largest developed chasm in Périgord. Nicknamed the "crystal cathedral," it offers a striking spectacle: a vast underground cavity lined with limestone concretions in fantastic shapes, enhanced by a play of light and music. The visit begins with a descent in a panoramic gondola—a unique experience in France—which lowers you into the heart of the chasm. Stalactites, stalagmites, draperies, and eccentrics create a mineral landscape of unreal beauty. The constant temperature of 13°C makes it an ideal visit during rainy weather or high heat. Children's workshops and evening tours in the summer complete the offering. Allow about 1 hour for the guided tour. Reservations are recommended in July and August.
The Villars Cave, prehistoric art and geology
55 minutes from the estate, the Villars Cave is a doubly remarkable site. It houses both spectacular geological concretions—fine stalactites, translucent draperies, imposing columns—and prehistoric paintings dating back more than 19,000 years. The paintings, created with manganese, represent horses, bison, and a unique scene in parietal art: a man facing a bison. The 600-meter underground path alternates between narrow passages and vast chambers, creating a dramatic progression that culminates before the prehistoric works. An outdoor prehistoric park completes the visit with workshops (spear-throwing, fire-starting, flint-knapping) that will delight both children and adults. In 2026, this natural and prehistoric site is being enriched with a new chamber previously inaccessible to the public.
The Tourtoirac Caves, underground river
45 minutes from the estate, the Tourtoirac Caves offer a different geological spectacle. Over millennia, an underground river has carved a network of galleries adorned with exceptional concretions: gours (natural basins), soda straws (stalactites as thin as spaghetti), and draperies in varied colors. Discovered in 1995 and opened to the public in 2010, these caves are remarkably well-preserved. The guided tour of approximately 45 minutes follows the course of the underground river and allows visitors to observe rare geological formations. The modern and accessible layout makes this site a comfortable visit for everyone.
Lascaux IV, a masterpiece of Prehistory
45 minutes from the estate, the International Center for Parietal Art at Montignac-Lascaux (Lascaux IV) is a must-see. This full-scale replica of the original cave, realized with staggering precision, allows visitors to admire the famous 20,000-year-old paintings under optimal conditions. The interactive museum accompanying the visit plunges the visitor into the world of Prehistory through immersive technologies. Allow half a day to fully enjoy the experience. Reservations are highly recommended, especially in summer.
The Grand Roc Cave and the Laugerie Basse Shelter
In Les Eyzies-de-Tayac (35 min), the Grand Roc Cave overlooks the Vézère valley and offers an exceptional panorama. Inside, concretions of extraordinary finesse—crystallizations, eccentrics, and jellyfish-shaped stalactites—create a fairy-tale universe. A few steps away, the Laugerie Basse shelter is one of the most important prehistoric sites in the world. Excavations have revealed tens of thousands of objects and portable art pieces that bear witness to the daily life of our ancestors 15,000 years ago.
Practical tips for visiting the caves
Temperature: It is between 12 and 14°C in all the caves, regardless of the season. Bring warm clothing even in summer.
Reservations: In July and August, book your visits in advance, especially for Lascaux IV and Proumeyssac. In the off-season, visits are generally possible without a reservation.
Combinations: Tourtoirac and Villars are close to each other and can easily be combined in one day. Proumeyssac can be paired with a visit to the village of Le Bugue. Lascaux IV requires a dedicated half-day.
Ideal activity for rainy weather: Caves are the perfect outing when the weather does not permit outdoor activities. With a constant temperature and a sheltered path, it is a backup plan that often becomes the highlight of the stay.
