Périgord, a land of limestone hills and verdant valleys, is home to some of the most beautiful villages in France. Close to Domaine de Pouzelande, these medieval gems offer a journey through time, featuring cobbled streets, perched castles, and crystal-clear rivers.
Brantôme, the "Venice of Périgord"
About 45 minutes from the estate, Brantôme is undoubtedly the most iconic village of the Périgord Vert. Nestled in a loop of the Dronne river, this small town enchants visitors with its Benedictine abbey founded by Charlemagne, its Romanesque bell tower (the oldest in France), and its hanging gardens. Stroll along the shaded quays, cross the Renaissance elbow bridge, and discover the troglodytic caves carved into the limestone cliff. In summer, flat-bottomed boats allow you to navigate the Dronne to admire the town from the water. The Friday morning market is an unmissable event for food lovers.
Saint-Jean-de-Côle, classified as one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France"
45 minutes from the estate, Saint-Jean-de-Côle proudly holds the label "Plus Beaux Villages de France." This perfectly preserved medieval village charms with its arcaded square, its Marthonie castle, its Romanesque priory, and its medieval bridge spanning the Côle river. Each year in May, the Floralies of Saint-Jean-de-Côle transform the village into a giant garden. Nurserymen, horticulturists, and artisans gather for one of the most beautiful floral events in the Southwest. The rest of the year, the village lives at the peaceful rhythm of its artist studios and plaza cafés.
Bourdeilles and its double castle
40 minutes from the estate, Bourdeilles offers a unique architectural spectacle: two castles on the same rocky outcrop. The 13th-century medieval keep stands alongside an elegant Renaissance residence with sumptuously furnished interiors. The furniture collection is one of the finest in the region. The village stretches along the Dronne, with its water mill, its Gothic bridge, and its golden stone houses. It is also an ideal starting point for a canoe trip down toward Brantôme.
Sorges, the truffle capital
35 minutes from the estate, Sorges is the self-proclaimed—and well-deserved—capital of the Périgord black truffle. The Truffle Ecomuseum retraces the history and production techniques of this "black diamond" that makes the region's gastronomic reputation. Marked truffle trails help visitors understand the unique ecosystem that produces this mythical fungus. In season (December to March), the Sorges truffle market attracts traders and gourmets. The village restaurants offer menus entirely dedicated to the truffle.
Excideuil and its Castle of the Viscounts
40 minutes northeast of the estate, Excideuil dominates the Loue valley from its imposing Castle of the Viscounts of Limoges. Richard the Lionheart besieged it three times without ever capturing it. Today, the remains of the keep and the panoramic view are well worth the detour. The town preserves beautiful medieval houses and a covered market hall that hosts a lively market on Thursday mornings. The surrounding countryside, hilly and wooded, is a magnificent hiking area.
Hautefort and its Renaissance castle
45 minutes from the estate, the Château de Hautefort is one of the most majestic in Dordogne. Perched on a promontory, it offers a 360° view of the Périgord countryside. Its French-style gardens, English-style park, and restored interiors make for an unforgettable visit. The village of Hautefort also deserves a visit for its 17th-century hospice, its stone houses, and its timeless atmosphere.
Ribérac and its Friday market
45 minutes west of the estate, Ribérac is famous for its large Friday market, one of the most significant in Dordogne. Local producers, artisans, and antique dealers share the aisles of this 13th-century bastide. The Romanesque domed church is also worth seeing.
Thiviers, gateway to the Périgord Vert
45 minutes from the estate, Thiviers marks the transition between Périgord Blanc and Périgord Vert. Its winter "marché au gras" (November to March) is an institution for foie gras and duck products. The Château de Vaucocour and the Romanesque church of Nantheuil complete the visit.
Organizing your tour from Domaine de Pouzelande
All these villages are accessible within 30 to 45 minutes from the estate. We recommend combining two to three villages per day, enjoying the markets in the morning and castle visits in the afternoon. We will provide you with maps, schedules, and itinerary suggestions tailored to your preferences. After a day of discovery, return to the calm of the wooded park, a dip in the pool, and, for guest room visitors, the pleasure of a homemade breakfast the following morning.
